Here’s 5 Tips to Maintaining Your Lace Wig
If you are shopping for a wig, there are several factors consider before your purchase—including its maintenance. Whether it’s synthetic or human— there are a few steps you can take to ensure you get the most life out of your new hair unit.
Be Gentle
The hairs on lace wigs are individually tied and secured at the base— the design imitates the scalp and is the reason for its popularity. The structure also makes the hair more delicate. So, although the hair looks like the scalp, be careful not to scratch, tug or pull at the wig. You can, however, comb it gently starting at the ends and working your way up, but be careful not to get too close to the base. With everyday wear the hair will naturally grow more fragile, so be intentional in handling it with care.
Don’t Over Wash
Although wigs are not attached to the head, they still require moisture. There are no natural oils keeping the hair hydrated, so it’s important that you don’t over wash it. Pay attention to its texture and smell. You’ll notice when it’s time for a wash. If you’re unsure, a good rule of thumb is after 30 wears or every 6-8 weeks.
Use Quality Products
When washing your wig, you’ll want to be intentional on using products that correlate with its quality. If you invested in a human hair custom unit, you’ll want to use a high-quality gentle shampoo, conditioner and serum. Drug store products tend to have a lot more chemical ingredients such as sulfates, parabens and synthetic fragrances that can damage the wig over time and strip it of its moisture. When purchasing a wig, you’ll want to consider the upfront cost of the piece as well as the products that go into its care regime.
Avoid Too Much Heat Heat
in moderation on human hair wigs is okay, but always use a heat protectant before use. Like our own hair, too much heat can lead to split and damaged ends on the wig. If this does occur, you can take it to a professional to have it trimmed, but prevention is key.
Store In Proper Conditions
You’ll want to keep the wig stored in a safe space away from heat and humid areas. If you don’t store it properly there is a risk of the wig becoming matted and dry. When not in use, store it in the box it came in, a satin bag or on a mannequin head. When in doubt take your wigs to a licensed hair professional every 2 to 3 weeks for regular maintenance. Lace wigs are a great option for anyone who gets bored with one hairstyle, needs a consistent protective style or even those with scalp conditions looking for temporary relief. No matter the reason, you must establish a proper wig care routine and you will enjoy the longevity of your investment.
